Over 120 years of growth
Doctors established the MDU in 1885 as a mutual organisation to protect the interests of their fellow professionals.
Today, the MDU is still a mutual company owned by our members, who include doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals. As always, we remain dedicated to supporting the medico-legal needs and reputations of all our members throughout their professional lives.
The benefits of membership of the MDU are all discretionary and are subject to the Memorandum and Articles of Association.

The MDU is not an insurance company and all benefits of membership are at the discretion of our Board of Management. However we provide to most individual paying members the additional security of a Professional Indemnity Policy* coupled with all the traditional benefits of discretion - the best of both worlds.
Doctors for doctors
The ethos of a "doctors for doctors" mutual is as strong as ever.
Our Board and Executive is led by doctors and our Cases Committee, which reviews the conduct of individual cases, is made up of some of the most eminent members of the profession in the UK and Ireland.
Many of our staff have been in clinical practice and have faced the dilemmas and day-to-day problems enabling them to understand and identify with our members' concerns and issues.
