The difference between the DDU and DPL or MDDUS
What is the main difference between the DDU and DPL or MDDUS?
Publication date: 27 April 2009
The DDU differs from all other UK defence organisations in the way we provide indemnity to our members.
The DDU is the only mutual defence organisation in the UK to offer dentists indemnity on an insured basis. This means that as a member you receive a professional indemnity insurance policy to cover clinical negligence claims.* This is a contractual agreement that will always provide assistance within the terms of the policy.
DPL and MDDUS only provide support for claims at the discretion of their Board. This is called discretionary indemnity and means there is no contractual right to assistance and no contractual agreement or policy.
The DDU believes discretionary cover alone is no longer sufficient. Would you feel comfortable waiting until you had a car accident before finding out if your insurance company would cover you?
The insurance policy is underwritten by two of the worlds top five reinsurers, International Insurance Company of Hannover Limited and SCOR UK Company Limited. Both are regulated by the Financial Services Authority to ensure there are available funds to meet future claims. Other defence organisations have no such financial backing and no external regulator to determine if there is sufficient money available to meet future costs.
* Professional indemnity insurance policy provided to most classes of membership
