Dento-legal advisers
Our
dento-legal advisers are on-hand, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week
to help you with dento-legal or ethical issues. All of our advisers
have been in dental practice and understand the realities of clinical
practice and the importance of your reputation.
They can assist with a wide range of issues from assistance
in dealing with complaints through to criminal investigations and
disciplinary proceedings
Rupert Hoppenbrouwers BDS LDSRCS
Rupert is head of the DDU. He is a former general dental practitioner
and was Director of the School of Dental Hygience at University College
Hospital, London from 1980 to 1986. He has lectured and written widely
on risk management and dento-legal matter and has a particular interest
in clinical negiligence and dental care professionals. He is currently
Chairman of the UK Dental Law and Ethics Forum.
Bryan D Harvey BDS DGDP
Bryan is deputy head of the DDU and has been a dento-legal adviser
for 11 years. Prior to this he was in general practice for 25 years
and was a vocational trainer as well as working in oral surgery. Currently he is chairman of Essex LDC and works alternate
Saturday mornings in practice. Bryan also lectures on HIV, stress,
dento-legal and ethical issues.
Mark Phillips BDS LDSRCS (Eng)
Mark has worked pedominantly in NHS dental practices as an associate and principal for 25 years prior to joining the DDU. He continues to work one day a week as a clinical demonstrator in the Prosthetic department and has recently been appointed chairman of the Dental Undergraduate Admissions Panel at GKT.
Alison Large BDS MFGDP(UK)
Alison qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 1999. She has been a vocational trainer (VT) with the Wearside VT scheme, and is currently an associate at a private dental practice in Oxfordshire. She will combine her work for the DDU with this role.
Iain Cuthbertson BDS LDSRCS (Eng)
Iain joined the DDU in 1997 as a full-time dento-legal adviser offering
advice and assistance to members with issues relating to treatment
of patients.
He graduated in 1975 and then spent 22 years providing clinical dentistry
in the hospital environment and as a GDP, both as an associate and
later as a practice owner.
Penny Vasey MBE BDS DGDP (UK)
Penny graduated in 1973 and has been in general dental practice for over 30 years whilst also mainiting a special interest in dental politics. She joined the DDU as a part-time dento-legal adviser. Penny is currently practising in a mainly NHS practice and is a member of the GDC’s independent Appointments Committee.
Leo Briggs BDS MSc
Leo Briggs qualified from University College Hospital, London in 1989. He has worked extensively in the Community Dental Service including a period overseas. He has also worked in general dental practice.
Leo gained a masters degree in Periodontology from the Eastman Dental Institute, London in 1995 and is on the GDC specialist register for Periodontics. Since 1995 he has provided specialist periodontal treatment in both the salaried dental service and private practice.
He has
a particular interest in Clinical Periodontics as
well as the salaried
primary dental services.
Nick Torlot
Nick qualified from University College Hospital in 1983.
After starting his career in hospital dentistry, he has spent the past 19 years as Assistant and then Clinical Director of Salaried Dental Services in Hampshire, while continuing to practise clinical dentistry.
He has also been involved in dental education as an adviser and vocational trainer with the London Deanery and as a trainer with the Winchester scheme.
Angela Harkins
Angela has worked predominantly in NHS dental practices for 19 years as both an associate and principal. She continues to work part-time in practice, and has a keen interest in the management of the anxious patient.
Prior to joining the DDU Angela completed an MPhil in Law and Ethics.
